During these past seven decades, millions of young players have enjoyed playing baseball. The American Legion and their 2 million members have raised millions of dollars each year for players to learn the importance of teamwork, discipline, leadership and good sportsmanship. The American Legion sponsors American Legion Baseball to give players an opportunity to develop their skills, personal fitness, leadership qualities and to have fun.

Legion baseball is one of the longest-running and most impactful youth baseball programs in the United States. Here’s a summary of historical milestones and good news stories:

History and Origins

American Legion Baseball began in 1925, driven by a vision to promote citizenship, sportsmanship, and healthy competition among America’s youth. The first national tournament was held in 1926, and after facing early financial hurdles, support from Major League Baseball ensured its continuation with a significant annual donation.

The program quickly expanded, with teams participating from every state by 1929. It is credited as the first to offer a national baseball tournament for teenagers in the U.S.

Community service and character-building have always been core values, and the program’s founding purpose was to teach good citizenship and sportsmanship to young men—an ideal that continues to this day.

Over 10 million young Americans have participated in American Legion Baseball in the program’s nearly 100-year history, gaining opportunities to learn teamwork, sportsmanship, and leadership that go far beyond the baseball field.

The American Legion World Series Champions are honored each year at the MLB World Series, connecting young athletes to the highest levels of the sport.

In July 2025, Congress introduced a resolution celebrating the 100th anniversary of American Legion Baseball, citing its positive mentorship and impact on over 10 million youth nationwide.

American Legion Baseball, which now imparts responsible citizenship and sportsmanship to some 50,000 athletes, is poised to receive congressional recognition in September.

This legacy of leadership and character formation through sport stands as a testament to the American Legion’s enduring influence in American communities and youth athletics.
